Big Data Week Milton Keynes With Support From MK:Smart and Zizo

Monday, November 23, 2015

The largest global big data festival, Big Data Week, has started this week and has been welcomed to Milton Keynes.

Running from November 23 until November 28, the week aims to inspire more individuals and enterprises to start a data project to tap into potential growth and look at day-to-day practical use.

Both local initiative MK:Smart and Milton Keynes-based next generation analytical data management platform Zizo have welcomed the week and shown support in raising awareness about its value.

MK:Smart is an initiative led by The Open UniversityMilton Keynes Council and BT, which was set up to target ways of supporting economic growth and use big data to manager key infrastructure networks as part of a smart city project.

The key infrastructure component for MK:Smart is the ‘MK Data Hub’, hosted at University Campus Milton Keynes (UCMK), part of the University of Bedfordshire.

Paul Sant, Associate Dean at UCMK, said: "As we begin a new era of a data-driven economy, we’re aiming to keep local businesses one step ahead. It’s all about doing clever things with data in a way which is digestible and commercially valuable.

“It feels like we’ve only just scratched the surface when it comes to unlocking the potential of local intelligence sourced through sensors and open data and we look forward to seeing how this initiative progresses.”

Laurence Armiger, Director at Zizo, said: “With the right model, organisations can embrace new data sources quickly and efficiently – and that includes the new real time feeds that are coming on stream driven by the Internet of Things. The smart city project underway in Milton Keynes is a great example of how vast amounts of data relevant to city systems is being collected from a variety of sources.

“The diversity of data being collected and shared in Milton Keynes is amazing and will provide a chance for innovative organisations to devise extraordinary new ways of exploiting data.”

Both MK:Smart and Zizo hope that Big Data Week will provide businesses in Milton Keynes with further insight into the opportunities that big data holds for both them and the city.
